Don’t forget beans, dried fruits and iron-fortified cereals—you can serve these on their own, or use as ingredients for making other foods.

Eating Healthy During Pregnancy

Starting off your with a healthy well balanced diet is the best thing you do for yourself and your baby. This way, you’ll only need to make a few adjustments during your pregnancy.

Your first trimester

If you detect it tough to maintain a balanced diet during your first trimester, you can rest assured that you’re not alone. Due to queasiness, some women will eat all of the time and gain a lot of weight in the process. Other women have trouble getting food down and subsequently lose weight.

Preventing malnutrition and dehydration are your most important factors during first trimester.

Calories

When you are pregnant, you need to consume around 300 calories more than usual every day. The best way to go about doing this is listening to your body when you are hungry. You should try to eat as many foods as possible from the bottom of the food pyramid.

Unless you happen to be a strict vegetarian, your protein uptake is not usually a problem for women who eat a healthy diet.

Iron

A lot of women will start their pregnancy off with a bit of iron insufficiency. Good sources of iron include dark leafy green vegetables and meats. Iron supplements should be avoided, as they can cause internal symptoms such as cramping, constipation, or diarrhoea.

Vitamins

As a fitness boot camp owner and Singapore personal trainer, I know that there can be a lot of confusion out there about diets and nutrition that really help people to get fit, lose fat and build muscle. The best healthy diet is one that people can stick to - so a healthy diet has got to taste good!

Here’s a simple tip for adding a wide, wide world of new flavors, textures and aromas to your healthy diet: eat fermented foods!

Kimchi, sauerkraut, natto,black garlic, brewed soy sauce, fermented garlic, kefir, pickled Japanese plums - umeboshi - all the stinky foods are good for you!

Fermented foods are made by allow micro-organisms to breakdown the carbohydrates and protein in foods. Fermentation takes time and the results brim with healthy substances (fermentation is able to enrich food with protein, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids and vitamins) and fantastic active cultures, including the “pro-biotics” family of microbes.

When I had finally forgotten those jars even existed, she’d draw one out from the depths of the fridge. How to Make Healthy Food Substitutions

Starting a diet doesn’t have to be a total change in the food you normally eat, but by making healthy food substitutions you can get started the next time you go to the grocery store. I’ve met many people who believe that low fat foods are going to taste terrible, but from my experience many are very difficult to tell from the original. In this article I’ve listed some suggestions that I use often on how to start making healthy food substitutions in your diet.

Try a turkey or a veggie product instead of the of the beef or pork version. I’ve been doing this for many years now and the alternatives are quite good as well with less than half the calories and fat, sometimes even less than that. Products out there are sausage, bacon, burgers, pepperoni, and so many others.

If you drink milk try to scale down from whole milk. Switch to 2%, 1%, or if you like the taste skim milk. I’ve been drinking skim for a long time to and now I really don’t like the fat in the others, it’s just too thick. There is enough fat in the foods most people eat every day that having fat in your beverage is unnecessary.

Switch to diet soda or cut out soda all together if you can. Let’s say you drink 5-6 12 ounce cans a day, that can be anywhere between 500 and 700 calories in regular sodas. That is a large portion of your calories for the day, and it is all sugar. If you will cut out soda and you will see some weight lost.

Try eating salsa instead of other fatty dips or cream based spreads. Salsa is delicious and comes in about countless different varieties. Most types have no or little fat, low calories and contain vitamins. Next time you are at the store compare a container of french onion dip to a jar of salsa. Salsa is much better for you.

Deep frying foods can turn something healthy into something very bad for you. Take a chicken breast for example, naturally they are quite healthy, but all that oil used in frying just won’t allow it. Instead of deep frying take that that same piece with some lemon juice, garlic, and black pepper, bake it and now it’s still tasty as well as good for you.

If you buy canned produce make sure you read the label first. Many of the vegetables will have salt added to them and many of the fruits have additional sugar. When in doubt buy fresh or frozen produce. Frozen produce can be just as beneficial as fresh with the bonus of having a longer shelf life. If you buy canned tuna make sure to get the kind packed in water not oils, as the oil adds plenty of extra fat and calories that are unnecessary.

These are just a few substitutions you can use in your diet to replace some foods that aren’t very good for you. Remember don’t change everything at once; try to find substitutions you really do like, and then experiment with new ones. Start making these healthy food substitutions and your body will thank you for it down the road.

Often as a personal trainer and fitness bootcamp coach in Singapore, I am asked about herbs and spices and how they can improve health, weight loss and fat loss results. I recommend adding tonnes of herbs and spices to everyone’s daily diet.

Why? Here are three awesome reasons to include herbs and spices in your foods.

1. They improve the flavor and taste of food without adding hidden or unhealthy excess calories. Almost all herbs are premissable on any kind of diet plan that you might be on. No matter what kind of diet you are on (low carb, high protein, etc) herbs can help you boost your results and make your taste buds happy as well.

2. Herbs and spices teem overflow with stuff that are good for you - vitamins, minerals, all sorts of health-giving phytochemicals etc. Many of these nutritive substances are most easily absorbed and effective in thei naturally-occuring forms, rather than the chemically-made, artificial ones found in many multi-vitamins or mineral supplements.

Consider going organic for herbs because there is a large variance in the quality of herbs and the amount of active ingredients they contain, so herbs are one of those things where cheaper is not better. Here are some very brief examples of certain benefits that recent research has been suggesting:

Cardamom - stimulate bile flow for liver health and fat metabolism, reduces flatulence, contains limonene that boosts the body’s production of an enzyme with antioxidant properties.

Cinnamon - helps reduce blood sugar and “bad” cholesterol
